model advice

I'm thinking about buying an older tractor for use on my sheep farm. I have a NH268 baler. I'd like to be able to move a large square bale. Run a bush hog. Use a front end loader. Would like a machine low to the ground because of the hills around here.

I'm no mechanic so something reliable would be nice.

I was looking at a Farmall 450. Would this be a good choice? Can anyone suggest a different model?

The 450 is a pretty tall tractor, but will do what you want and are under priced for the value they bring. An IH 460 Utility 0r 504U, 544, 656U are all good examples. A 350 U with good power steering and tight steering linkage is also good. Jim

I was also thinking about the 350. So the utility was a shorter model? Would that be harder to find? Thanks for the tips.

I have also looked at a JD 2030.

I own a 350U and would not hesitate to use it with a loader. The steering is radically hard to turn if manual, and the power steering is good if the linkage and spindles have been greased regularly. There are solutions to a manual or poorely maintained PS system from Jackson Power Steering company. Jim

This is mine. Has combine tires, a big bore kit with dome pistons. Still has original TA and clutch. Jim

If that baler is what I think it is and does the big as in around 1800lbs square bales then neither tractor will handle that baler. You need something in the 75HP range or bigger to handle that baler. Shoot the 450 I had would not handle the NH850 round baler I had and it calls for a 55HP tractor to run it so keep looking you need one a bit bigger

Hi
If you"re no mechanic that 2030 or any Deere like that is the last tractor to be looking at. when they give hyd problems or trans problems they are ignorant and very expensive to fix. There are way to many parts in from Deere that are a few thousand dollars each.

Im startin to find this out on a customer 1830. They may be getting the chop from the JD parts lists in a while, from what a guy told me last year. So parts may be hard to find unless after market pick them up. I doubt they will all be available either if they do, used stuff is hard to find depending on the tractor options fitted.

Was a nice tractor when new but many are gettin worn out or big things just starting to fall off. you could get a wreck thats just trouble and costs you you"re shirt when you find this out.
You can at least fix some other brands pretty easy and cheaper if parts are around someplace !
Regards Robert

1830 is/was a Canada only model. Identical to the GERMAN 2030, totally different than the US 2030, hence why they renamed it 1830...

1830 is a nice tractor, spend a few hours on one.

Not sure your budget, but do yourself a favor and skip right to a 574 or 674 or newer.

IPTO, hyd brakes, power steering, diff lock, syncro trans, 3pt and enough hyd to run loader and remote. Easily run a 268 square baler and with loader will handle round or large square bales. Easier to find a loader for one too compared to many older IH's.

The Utility is shorter in length and height and is more stable, but it weighs somewhat less if equipped the same way. It has 28 inch rear rims as opposed to 38 inch on the 300, 350, 400, 450. It is similar to a JD 2030, which is a newer tractor and will probably cost twice as much because of the green paint. I am not a hay person, but I am not sure that a utility will handle the bale as well as the row crop although it is "safer".

Wow! Great photo. Nice looking tractor. Let me know when you'd like to sell it! : )

No, I think we're talking about two different balers. Mine is a NH268--a very small square baler. I am using it with my horses but if I can't get 'er done, I have a neighbor who will make me large squares and he can make them on the small side. Probably 700-800#.

the NH268 is an old square baler from the 1960's. the 560 international will move any round bale.
I bale with the 660 ih and an NH 851 round baler and that baler don't make the 660 work. only think is a cab would be nice for baling, as when the wind is blowing wrong direction you are covered in dust and chaff.

You might look at a 560 (like previously mentioned) or 706/756/766. If you want something shorter a 454 or the like, would be a possibility.
