I lived in Havre for 7 years. -47 once! nasty.
If your M is 6v and intended to stay that way, 1100CCA and 00gauge cables with soldered and sealed terminals are really needed. If it is 12v, 900 CCA and 0gauge cables are best practice. A block heater used for one to two hours will also be part of the routine. Put the block heater on a heavy duty timer. Jim

What Janicholson is rite, and I would add that the best money spent after that is to make sure the ignition and carb are tuned up to specifications. Lite weight oil like perhaps 10-40. Keep the fuel tank full.

A common reply to you question is, The biggest that will fit in the box! You didn't say 6 or 12 volt, or does it have a heater? And the oil? If you are going to start it out in the cold you might want lighter oil than 10W40. Lots of good advice from others.

i have never seen a 1100cca 6 volt battery, and it would never fit in farmall m's box. most I have seen are 925 cca and they are too big also.
just take your coal or wood ashes and put them under the oil pan and it will start easy in I hr.
did this many times on the w-6 at home when I was about 17 years old and hand cranked it to get it started at -20F . zero is not even cold yet.

To get my H started reliably when it is below zero I put another 6V battery in parallel with the one on the tractor. I made a little platform that bolts to the loader frame and used a couple short (heavy) battery cables up the the regular battery.

Here is one of several. Trojan Brand AGM
Not cheap but what is. If starting is important, The price might be OK. Just ideas. A block heater and a oil p[an heater are sometimes needed. In Montana at 45 degrees below, power steering fluid is solid! Jim

Carl, from upstate NY,(30 below not uncommon) just a couple more tidbits
1) make sure you have no accumulation of water in the gearbox to freeze and bind, maybe causing BIG problems
2) park so as to roll start, on wood or plywood scraps so she don't freeze into the mud.
front tires too. It wont take too big a ramp.
3)set up carb and ignition stuff so she fires up on 2nd or 3rd pull of HAND CRANK, every time.
(assuming mag start).
If this works, the battery should get it
Roll and hand crank as backups.
hope this help
