i have seen seat color of red / white or silver or black what was the origenal color from farmall i have put black on all mine just for the look i like it best

I was around a lot of original letter series Farmalls in the late 1940's and early 1950's when I was in my youth as I drove all of the neighbors tractors during the grain harvest as my grandfather had the thrashing machine which was used in our neighborhood in Missouri. I don't recall seeing anything other then silver colored canvas on any of them. Photographs of several train flatcars loaded with C's or Super C's has been posted on this forum before and those appear to have had a black seat or at least a black cover for protection of the seat during transport. I think the red and white combination came well after production ceased for the letter series models in 1954 and earlier as a reproduction produced replacement seat color scheme. Hope this helps as this has been hashed several times here and you will be receiving other responses, Hal.

The earliest seats were black--when the black stopped I don't know because I have seen the pictures of black seats (late 40's) that farmallhal mentioned. Before that I was under the impression that all but the first couple of years were silver. The red and white seats were never sold by IH.

I can remember seeing new Hs,Ms and Bs since around 40-41 never seen a bloack seat all were the canvas silver gray color on new ones.Remember Dads new F-20 in 38 and seeing new 20S in dealers showroom.

The factory seats I saw in the '50's and '60's [I wasn't alive before 1954] were silver upholstery over a red or black pan, depending on what paint IH decided to put on them. My GUESS is that the factory pan was red, and the black was used only on the replacements. The red and white seats were generally a padded seat pan cover, and were tied in the back with a perimeter drawstring.

Dad had a new '49 C and '54 Super C and both were silver. C padding was very thin if any and SC was thicker, probably 1/2".

As I recall from 1939 to about 1949 or early 1950 the seats were a dark charcoal colored canvas duck covering about a half inch of jute padding. From that time on the seats had silver canvas covering about three quarters of an inch foam padding and most were the Monroe type frame with the triangular wound coil spring and shock absorber suspension, All seats were red on the bottom/outside from the factory.

From the late 1940s onward they were padded silver. I remember that well....I sat on a bunch of them in those years. Black and red came from seat companies trying to make a buck; they sold them to IH dealers also.

I put a silver canvas seat on my M and I now wish I went with the black canvas. The silver seat gets dirty quick.
