986 on ebay

looking at a 986 on ebay close to me. has what looks like a good oil leak on the front of the tractor. what is up there that can leak and could it be an expensive fix??

Prices seems about right provided the fix is simple enough. I wouldn't give much more then that though...

it was private listed at 9k. found a 1066 for 10k with about same hours, with year round cab and a/c. which would be better???

I don't like 86s so that wouldn't be a tough one for me...

what is it about the 86 series you dont like? this would be my first large ih (got an H and had an M) so any info i can get it great.

I have had a 986 for over 10 years was used for corn planting, hay baling and many other chores pretty much bullet prof would not be afraid of one at all.

IMO the 1066 would be a touch tougher horse. The year round cabs are ok. The cabs on the 86's are way better but the shifting can be more problem-matic aside from being on the "wrong" side. I had a 986 for awhile and I liked it. It was bought cheap though for the purpose of flipping. I kept it too long but did sell for a profit. Wouldn't mind a 9-1086 again when my budget allows to keep one.

86 cab should sell the deal. I bid 14k on a farm auction on a really nice one 4 years ago and I didn't get it.

Tractor is running fuel out of the exhaust because it isn't being worked hard enough.

"Lazy" treatment is very hard on diesels.

Yep, my 986 is not worked enough and probably needs new rings as it uses more oil than I like it to during planting season. About a quart after 16 hours work pulling the planter. Oil pressure is good and steady plus no noises or heating or any other problem. Oil usage has remained constant so I will put off doing the rings for this coming season.

Same thing a Casey. The shifting is weird and it can be a pain to shift if it is worn out. From what I read that is a curse of all "modern" Internationals. I never liked how the cab sat so far forward either. It is weird to look out of and back up to an implement. I'm sure you would get used to it, but I never ran my FILs long enough to get used to it. I should add that his 986 was worn out junk so that probably added to my bad opinion.

As stated, the 986 cab could seal the deal if it will be an everyday workhorse.
