Super A cylinder head

New guy here from NC. Will an early cylinder head # 6716DB work in place of #251172R1 head on my 53 Super A? I have 3 1/8" bore and stepped
head pistons. Thanks!! Ed in NC.

what is it off of? A head from an "A", 100, 130, 140, C, Super C, 200, and 230 should work.

A quick look on the Case/IH online parts book should also confirm.

Check by putting some modeling clay on top of the domed piston then set the head on and turn engine over as early heads wouldnt allow some hi-dome pistons to clear. What is the cast code on the head. I dont have the parts book rite now. It also depends on the dome as RED POWER ones have a tall dome.

One cylinder head to avoid is a distillate head. they will be low compression, and perform poorly compared to a Gasoline only head. Jim

Thanks Jim, Gene, and RTR. The 6716DB is originally off an old wrecked B that's been here forever. My Super A is s/n 340858, engine s/n FCM 208589, number into the head is 251172R1 with a "L" underneath and a small tag with "77T" to the left of the 251172R1. Engine has water pump, dipstick, and has been in family since new, no known engine replacement. My 251172R1 head is cracked. Combustion head dimensions are identical on both heads except the spark plug boss on 251172R1 head extends 1/4" further into combustion chamber. Water jacket holes, valve lengths identical. My Super A parts book TC-39C Rev. 3 says the 251172R1 head can replace the 6716DB head and that's the only reference I can find to the 6716DB head. I think it will work ok and I'm going to try it. Thanks to all for the advice. Ed

Your engine is from a power unit with the dipstick ect. They made a lot of changes in heads size of the hole where sparkplug goes deeper for sparkplugs size of the combustion chamber but the big item is the size dome on your new pistons some have different domes that engine was made from 39 till like 51 when waterpumps ect were added. I like to go with cast codes i have a bunch of heads and putting them side by side you can see the small changes that were made even got some distillate pistons if someone would want.

I used red power domed pistons Gene. My head and block were both milled. After putting the sleeves in a micrometer showed that the sleeves were just a tiny fraction out of spec. I can't remember but it was a teeny tiny number out of spec according to the service manual. Deck a d head were shaved and I has no clearance issues. I don't know the exact number, but I took a pic of the high spot when we measured. I'll try to find it.

To the OP. All the heads RTR mentioned is correct, but I will add in the rare chance you come across a 240 that will work too. I can't remember how many different valve train kits there are for the 113/123 c.i. Engine, but to piggyback on what Gene said, there is more than 1 kit out there.

I used a 130 block and a Super A head. 3 angle valve job, domed pistons and a shaved block and head. I might have only 20 horsepower, but man does it have good compression. With the exception of the freeze crack forming on the block these are really good engines.

BTW Ed, NC has a strong network of International Harvester fans. I go to the IHC 37 plow days when I can. There are salvage yards all over NC. I know where a bunch of heads are on the eastern side of NC.

What tractors used bigger combustion chamber heads like this part number -- HEAD, cylinder, w/studs and valve guides, assembly (Distillate or kerosene) (Will work for 351649R21) from a Farmall C, and which used the cupped piston method? Jim
