Hey Guys

Just bought a partially restored 47 M. It came with a newer 3 point hitch, but im looking to sell that and bring back to stock with a swinging drawbar. Just getting opinions on drawbars and where to find good solid used components in general. This is my first Farmall tractor restoration. Look forward to hearing from you all.

A drawbar The bent long steel going under the trans to a pivot, should come from an M, SM, SMTA, or from a 400 or 450 with no fast hitch. The Bend inthe bar, and pin hole size are different than those on an H/SH. The "U" shaped part is heavier in thickness than the nearly identical "U" on an H series (including SH). The Roller was optional and (I think) desirable. Many salvage yards have them. Jim

Well, the better designed aftermarket 3 point hitches allow the factory U shaped drawbar as well as the swinging drawbar to be retained.

Tractor is a whole lot more useful with the 3-point on it. I would recommend keeping that 3 point kit instead of selling it if I were you. I have added a 3 point kit to my Farmall h and am in the process off adding a 3 point kit to my Farmall M. Both will retain factory drawbars although I am having to do some modifications on the M kit as it was not originally designed to keep the factory drawbar like the one on my h was. Few simple mods and it will be good to go.

Tractor junk yards best place to acquire the missing parts you need.

Jim, I might be wrong, but I believe the swinging drawbars on M's were not as thick as the ones on the Supers and number models and they used a strap over the loop drawbar. The roller type swinging drawbar was standard on the Supers and later number models, not an option. A lot of guys put the rollers on their M's when they became available. True, the H had a lighter loop and swinging drawbar with a strap, but I'm not sure what the Super H's and number models had except that as I remember they had the roller retainer too. I worked some at a dealership when the Supers and then number models came out...but that was a while back and I admit my memory isn't what it used to be.

Luckily, you are working on the second most common IH tractor of all time. Find your local tractor salvage yard. They are certain to have an M or three on the lot, and you should be able to get any part you need.

First picture would be what came on a 47 model. Swing drawbar pivot and pin is pictured like the one only used on very early tractors though. Pivot casting had to be unbolted from the transmission to remove the swing pin on those. Later ones had the little plate show in the picture that could be removed to let pin out the bottom of the casting. Also real early tractors used longer angle brackets and support rods. Probably in 1940 and earlier tractors going on my memory. Picture with the roller is the last type attachment IH sold as replacement parts for a M tractor. Swinging drawbar anchor was changed. Both the U and swing drawbar was made thicker. Roller used on the swing drawbar. Rollers also had a change along the way with the mounting hole location for the roller. Different hardness of the drawbar metals and fine threads sometimes were used on the angle bracket attaching eye bolts were changes since 1947. U and swing drawbars in real good condition are kind of hard to find.
