'42 H Carb Help

I am new to the tractor world. After sitting for 10 years, I cleaned the crud out of my '42 H distillate carburetor. When I go to start it up, full choke, I hear a sucking/spraying sound...I release the choke and gas pours out the carb inlet.

So...I order up a rebuild parts kit and replace all the parts (except idle mix jet b/c it's stuck). All passageways soaked in brake cleaner and blown with compressed air and should be clear. I go to start 'er up but gas still pours out the inlet BUT only when I use the choke. Engine will not fire (may be timing issue also).

Any ideas why gas pours out when I use the choke?

Thanks!!!

I din't think gas should pour out, but some gas will drip from the bottom of the carb if the choke is used for a extended period.

To start my H (distilate carb) I pull the choke out all the way, crank it two or three times (ruh-ruh-ruh), open the choke, open the throttle 7 or 8 clicks, turn the ignition on and crank it again. Usually it fires and then I use a little choke to smooth it out until it warms up a little.

These tractors are all different so you will have to figure out what yours wants to start. Having a good set of points and the timing set right are critical.

Sounds like your over choking it. Only takes a moment of holding her choke on to do the job of you even need to choke it. Or you have the float set wrong or the float is not floating or the needle is not seating as it should be.
Also you need to make sure you have a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more

I think you are over choking it, would hold on any more carb work until you see if ignition is good working.

Do you have good spark?

If it ran when you parked it the timing will not have jumped out of place. Timing is almost never a problem unless some one pulled the distributor off the tractor. One thing you should check is the air cleaner since you said it sat a long time the air cleaner maybe clogged up

I totally agree with old and David G that unless someone has had the distributor out after it was parked timing is probably not involved in your problem. In fact, I have never had to adjust the timing on my Farmalls once they were set up correctly to start with, Hal.

So how is this global warming doing down your way?? I have all of maybe 1.5 inches of snow here

Email sent but you must be living good as the snow found us for a good 6 inches. Looking forward to some global warming for sure, Hal.

I have seen gas run out of updraft carb when over choked. Get enough air to it and it will pop off.

Just because you blew air doesent mean the passages are completely clead. I have used small drill bits using my fingers to turn the bit and sometimes find some crud is still there even use a small mag lite to shine thru and with mirrors to be sure the passages are completely clean.
