oil bath filter

is there a certian oil weight i should be using in my super h's oil bath filter system? does it change for cold weather also?

thanks

Originally different weights were used for different outside temperature ranges in the engine. Generally the same weight went in the air cleaner as used in the engine.
Now I don't know. Always wondered if detergent oil works the same in the air cleaner as non detergent.
For the air cleaner I still use 20 weight non detergent in cold and 30 in hot. Maybe someone will explain if detergent or non detergent acts any different in a air cleaner.

Multi wt oil is fine. (I don"t think I would use 5W-30 or 0w-30), but 10-30, 15-40, 10-40 would work. Jim

My local IH service manager recommends Non Detergent oil in the air cleaner. I don't remember his reasoning though.

most certainly does change with cold weather. the colder the weather the thinner the oil you need in there. if your running in -30-40 temp's then you need a 10 weight oil. you can even thin it your self with some kerosene or diesel to match the temp.
summer temp's don't matter just use what the engine is using.

I use 30 weight all year round. In winter I have a unit that I put on that pulls air from a jack built around muffler. The air cleaner and oil run warm and does away with carb iceing in cold weather.

Years ago I was told that detergent had a tendency to foam and that was the reason for useing non detergent oil. I don't know if there is any truth to that.

The consensus seems to be use whatever oil you use in the engine. I have just been reading the memoirs of a service engineer ( Who worked for MF, but the story is still relevant ) . Whilst working in Africa he was called out to see a Massey 135 tractor which had.. er... 'engine problems' When he looked in the oil bath air cleaner the bowl had no oil in it but was full of sand! Apparently the (African) tractor driver had thought the sand in the air cleaner looked a little bit oily, so he tipped it out, cleaned the bowl then replaced it with nice new clean sand instead.
