300 utillity

I have a 300 utillity ih that wont start unless u
put hand over breather tube and then it starts and
runs as long as u keep hand on an off, wont work
with full choke by itself. we are all baffeled any
help would be apreciated thank you.

I have one that does the same. Generally after some rain or I refilled then gas tank. Seems either will get all the condensed water into the sediment bowl at once. Also brings in all the rust too. Dump your sediment bowl a couple times until the gas looks nice and fresh. This new stuff will burn if you dump it on a fire, but it will absorb water and not fire in the engine.

Only reason your hand works better than the choke is either choke does not close completely or the choke butterfly has a spring load relief valve in it that is to help prevent over choking. I solder them closed.
If it won't continue to run without the hand of course you have a fuel problem, carburetor problem or leaking manifold.

It is just not getting enough gas, you just have to find out why.
Dirty tank, plugged sediment bowl, plugged fuel line, carb intake screen, dirty needle and seat, rusty/bent float.
That will get you started.

thanks for the help we have rebuilt the carb , drainded the gas tank cleanded the glass bowl. we changed manifold gasket. so far nothing seems to work but still trying, it has to be in the fuel system some where.
