water in rear end on an H

Keep getting water in my rear end, can't figure out where it is coming from any suggestions? What kind of oil should I be putting in there?

If the tractor is not used hard enough, condensation will form on inside of the housing and you will have water to contend with. Even a shed-ed tractor will get this form of water problem.Get used to draining the water out each fall.

The shifter will let water in if the tractor is left out in the weather, or so I have been told.

As said by other you could be getting it around shifter or it could be condensation. If condensation I crack plug in spring and drain water if any. If you could find a shifter boot that might help if its coming in there. As for oil 85-90 will work but if your located where you have a lot of hot weather and work your tractor hard you might want to go with a heavier oil.

In addition, the tractor must sit for at least 3 or 4 days to separate the water from the confection it becomes when mixed by the gears. Jim

A few remarks;
First, seal up where the bolts bolt down the transmission cover. I"ve always thought those nice depressions were a bad design, they can admit every drip of water that runs off, if there"s a gap anyplace.
Second; I don"t think some water would do a lot of damage, theres" a substantial volume in the bottom of the transmissoin, it can store a bit of water.
Third; Don"t beat yourself up too bad over this. It"s IH"s 1939 design. Welcome to 1939 technology.

I have often wondered just how condensation gets in a tractor tranny as the only opening is the gearshift lever. I have tractors i have owned for 40 plus yrs with no "water" in the tranny but they do not set out in the rain either.

Where do you live? Mine don't sit out in the rain either, but they get water in them. Don't you ever walk out to the shed and everything is dripping wet from condensation? You can't tell me the outside of the casting has that much water on it and the inside has none.

I have an M, no H, but all those holes in the deck are blind, that is do NOT lead directly into the case. But you also have axle mounts, etc. Most of the water gets in from condensation, from the air.
Indoors, outdoors won't matter. IF the machine sees a daily temp swing ( and humidity swing ) yur gonna get moisture in the gear box. Unless your driving a lot to heat it up and drive out the moisture it accumulates. Can be a real problem if it freezes solid. One guy around here said he broke a hole in the case in real cold weather, like 40 below. Other guys put in some antifreeze. Best I think is to park it for a week and loosen the drain plug, finger tight.
Back it out till the water drips but NOT the oil.
Pull the coil wire out and stick it in your pocket. Leave it for a day or 2. Can lift the front end a tad if you want, drive up on a 2x4 will help a little.
Again -Pull the coil wire out and stick it in your pocket.
