560 diesel starting

I just picked up a 560 diesel with what the seller says 450 hours on engine job when first starting I run glow plugs for 45 seconds then start to crank it has to crank quite a bit without much smoke or even a sputter but all of a sudden it fires up on all six and with in a minuet smoke has cleared
Now on my 460 diesel with 5500 plus hours and six new glow plugs I can glow plug for 20 seconds and start to crank it will smoke and cough right off and catch on 3 cylinders and pick up on all six with in a couple minuets but smoke won"t clear until up to 180 degrees
Tested glow plugs on 560 and all work but why would that one need to crank so much more to start ?
Thanks dan.

Hi.

How good is your starter and battery and cables? I have a 660 that I thought started not bad, then I saw another one with a rebuilt starter and it turned the engine over faster than mine. I had the starter redone and it starts a lot better that it did before. Just my experince.

Cheers

lots depends on engine condition, valves and rings and sleeve wear. the compression has to be right up there for a good start. i put sleeves and pistons and had the head totally done on my brothers 660 and that thing is running on the second revolution after holding glow plugs for 40 sec. and no smoke either.
but on mine it has to crank for about 5-7 seconds before firing up then it smokes for about another minute before clearing up. also had the head of on mine and just resurfaced the seats but i see that is not good enough.
also need to make sure your timing is right on also, as per manual for the tractor. and also batteries need to be in good condition as these engines require a good cranking speed to start. when everything is up to snuff these 282's start with only a couple cranks. your smoking is probably due to injector problems. with out the proper spray pattern that will cause hard starting.

Same reason my 1998 MX200 will start before the engine makes one revolution and my 2002 MX 240 takes 5 seconds or so before it starts?????

Both have 3500 to 3600 hours on them.

Everyone always wants to talk about engine condition (cylinder components, head condition, batteries, cables, starter, timing, etc) which I agree all are very important when it comes to starting a diesel. However some of the most commonly over looked items are injectors and the injection pump. People so often will rebuild a diesel and never once touch the injectors or the pump. If the pump is weak, the spray pattern or pop pressure is off on the injectors you can chase hard to start problems forever.

In your case though, sounds to me as if the pump is almost loosing prime and takes a minute to pick it back up. Which could be early signs of a worn pump head. Might possibly go out one day and it will just not start.

Your MX240 has to turn 2 complete revolutions before the ECM determines engine position and commences fueling to start.
