Farmall 460

My farmall 460 ta isn't working anymore it worked fine now
nothing it just vibrates when i try to use it. What should I do ?

You need to be more clear. When the lever is pulled back does the tractor stop? Or does it not change speed when the lever is pulled back? Or does the tractor stay in the t/a range with lever forward? Or does the tractor not move with lever back or forward?

The TA throw out bearing and linkages were probably out of adjustment and the TA throwout bearing was pushing slightly on the fingers of the TA clutch. this may have caused the failure of the TA throw out bearing, and possibly the fingers as well. The vibration is possibly the remnants of the fingers rubbing on the remnants of the throw out bearing. Split time to fix it (likely) or leave it in direct, lever forward, and continue to use it, many do just that for years. Jim

Be sure it's not really in LOW range all the time now.

If it's in high range, the tractor will not roll backwards down a hill if you hold the clutch pedal halfway out.

If it's in low range, the tractor will freewheel out of control down hills, so BE CAREFUL.

We had one like this once. Thought the TA was shot, but it turned out someone had adjusted it wrong and ruined the TA clutch. We thought it was in high, but it was really in LOW.

why are u using it? if its for the hell of it then you dont need it. that T.A. was designed to be used when doing field work and under a heavy pull to be used for a short time.this was so you didnt have to stop and shift to a lower gear. once you got threw the tough spot you were to then use direct drive. another place it comes in handy is for baling hay when you run into heavy bunches in the windrow.. other than that the t.a. is just there and dont even think of it. you have 4 gears to select from and i have yet to find a reason to need a t.a. on any of these tractors.
so if you dont want to spend a pile of money to fix it,m just dont use it and all will be fine.

Only problem is the T/A clutch won't release and that's going to cause hanging in gear and hard shifting which can lead to other problems. Correct setup releases the T/A clutch whenever the clutch pedal is pushed down. If the actual T/A unit ramp and roller unit was shot and never catches it wouldn't mater. Don't think that's the case with yours.
Need to split at the engine rear, remove clutch shaft, other parts and get the top cover off the center housing. When you get enough removed the T/A release bearing and clutch comes out the top.
Get a manual or other to do it. Step by step is more typing than I want now.

I suppose it depends on where you live and how you use the tractor whether or not it is worth fixing it. If you live where it's flat and don't use it for heavy tillage work or baling, or several other jobs where it's handy, just don't use the TA. Lot of people got along fine with a Super H, and you would basically have a 6 cylinder Super H with a few more HP. There was a reason IH made these with a TA and that was to make it more versatile.
