I have a farmall m, 1949 model that i"m fixing up,..i notice a lot of yellow paint under the red, the yellow is the first coat mostly on the seat pedestal and frame rails. were these tractors used by state and/or county for something,..does anyone have a pic of the correct seat pedestal for my 49.....also some might remember my post about my brakes although lots of lining were out of adjustment, bought good used bands and problem was solved, must be cheap aftermarket parts

My H had a lot of yellow showing through, I was told it was primer. It was an ugly duckling but it was a good worker and I would still be using it if I hadn't bought a 300.

It is possible that your M came from the factory with yellow paint, but it's more likely that the yellow you are seeing is primer from a previous re-paint. Your M probably came from the factory with the standard pipe frame seat, but if it now has the Monroe style seat, keep it. The Monroe is a much more comfortable riding seat.

Two seats could be called correct in 1949. Something like on the tractor pictured, had just a few changes by 49 but looks basically the same. One that is off the tractor was available and is probably the most common found on a 49 at this date. One more type not pictured could of stretched some into 49. Should make clear that the other seat I mentioned was only available for a short time from IH and stopped being furnished in 1948. But some seats in the system could have been dealer installed or sold in 49.

IH did not use primer at the factory.

Legend has it that IH would paint the tractor any color you wanted if you paid for it.

While it is entirely plausible that this is the case, it's impossible to prove whether the yellow is factory original or a thorough repaint.

the seat I have is the red one that"s off the tractor,...so I guess it"s probably original...thanks guys

When I was but a wee lad, farmers would periodically have their tractors repainted ever couple of years as a matter of course.

Dealers would tune 'em up and clean the things without charging an arm and a leg like they do today.

Bet you're just seeing some old primer. I've seen that yeller paint under the red a lot on these old things.

My files indicate the red seat is a Monroe "E-Z Ride" tractor seat, made by Monroe Auto Equipment Company of Monroe, MICH., I believe it was standard equiupment, but I"m not sure the date it started becoming stndard equipment.
Put some sort of lumbar support back rest on that, get it set at the right angle, it is really comfortable.

One way you might be able to tell is chip some of the red paint away where the decals are and if there are old decals on top of yellow paint that could indicate that the tractor was painted yellow at some point.

Seat off the tractor was listed as a hydraulic seat attachment on a M from may 1948 and up to the start of stage 2 SM tractors. Like other attachments it was more common to get tractors with the attachments installed on the newer models.
Seat pictured this time was a hydraulic seat attachment for a M in 1947 and 48. Don't know if IH purchased both types from Monroe or what, but they listed them under IH numbers for the seats and parts.
this picture of new ones from a 1947 train wreck shows the Monroe type installed when shipped.
