My B-275 has a retrofitted Bosch VA injector pump which is worn, but runs ok at higher rpms.

After sitting for a couple months, I've started it, and it sticks wide open. I can regulate the speed by intermittently pulling the shutoff, but I cannot get it to idle or run normally.

I noticed it will do this if the fuel bowl valve is shutoff, and will immediately "come out of it" when the fuel valve is opened.

As an experiment, I closed the bowl and ran it out of fuel. Upon getting fuel back, the symptoms are the same.

Any idea what is making this old VA pump act like this? Whacking on it has not loosened anything that matters.

Most like the control sleeve on the high pressure pump plunger is stuck in the "max fuel" position. Another (long shot) possibility is the internal governor has failed from stripped drive gear, stuck/broken linkage, etc.

The pump needs a visit to a reputable diesel pump shop.
 
Bosch EP/VA pumps are hydraulically governed, not mechanical. Sounds like the throttle valve is stuck, causing the control pin to break. Pump needs to be torn down by someone who has been trained. Very few parts are available anymore.
 
A bosch va pump has no machanical governor. It is done by hydraulics. Any time you get air-or vacuum bubbles in these pumps they will act strange. A worn pump itself can do wild things. I would guess that your metering valve is stuck. Is the center of the throttle linkage turning when you move the lever? Or is the spring override just moving? I have repaired my share of VA pumps. Parts are getting hard to find,but if you know where to look some are still out there. I would be glad to look at this pump for you if you decide to go that route. Al Baker 231/757/0064
 
where u get that idea, definitly NOT! thats a good way to screw up a pump.do u realize it is very tight tolerences in pumps. it has to be disassembled by experienced personal.
