Looking at a Hydro 84, diesel engine has been run low on oil. Should crank be replaced or can it be reground and live? Runs, but has knock that is louder when warm. Has one spool valve with three point, says trans is OK. Not sure what to offer, best thing is tires are near new. Are parts easily available, or scarce?

The engine should be considered scrap. Lifters, rings, ca, and other parts may be toast. If you buy it make clear the engine is going to cost 100% of the trqactors purchase price to rebuild. Jim

That engine was used in a lot of IH tractors. If you can get it cheap enough, I would take a chance, tear it down and see what all it needs. Parts are available. I took one apart that was making a racket and found that all that was wrong was the balancer was shot.

I agree with Bill, take it apart and look, buy it cheap ...you can use any of the Neuss engines from a 155 to a 268 turbo or maybe get creative and bolt in a D310 or D358

the balancer on the four cylinder engines would sometimes lose the lead weights or the bushings ..plenty of junkyard donors to repair the engine

Transmission is a different subject tho, the parts inside are expensive but, ...you will really like it for loader work or baling , if it is in good shape, you keep good oil in it and never overheat it, they will last a very long time
