engine diagnosis

I know this is on a Massey Harris 30 but you guys have good suggestions as well as the folks on the Massey board.

I have a MH 30 that starts and runs great but it smokes ( quite a bit). Did a compression test and all are 105. plugs are black and wet.

could it be valve guides? I think it is called a "L head motor " - looks like a flathead to me.

Can the valve guides ( if that is it) be replaced with the motor in the tractor? Does it take special tools?

thanks for any information!

Valve guides should not be much of an issue on flat head engine. I would expect the oil rings are stuck.

There is a mixture of ATF that some let soak.

"Flathead" is just another name for an L-head engine. (So also are "valve in block" and "side valve" engine)...

If valve guides are bad it will make the most smoke at slow idle and under light load. It will clear up noticeably or even go away under constant full load condition.

Don't know whether the valve guides are replaceable on the Massey 30 engine (the Continental F162).

If it is really bad going down a hill in road gear using engine braking, it is Valve guides. L head engine guides need to be really bad, and really over oiled, due to the fact that they are upside down and need to suck oil up, not let it leak down (as in an overhead valve engine).
If it smokes when pulling hard and never cleans up, it is rings and oil control. If you have owned it during the time this smoking has started and gotten worse, it probably needs to be rebuilt. If it was claimed by a former owner that it was recently overhauled, they might have put in the rings wrong, or the wrong rings.
