H drive shaft

I have an H that this spring I was going to move the tractor from the snowbank. When I tried to move it, I heard a snap, and then I could not move it. Thinking that it was the shaft from the clutch to the transmission, I removed the hydro pump so I could see the problems. The trouble is not there, but inside the transmission. What can it be. The shaft drives the hydraulic pump.

If the hydraulic pump still works with the clutch out and the tractor in gear, the counter shaft and the constant mesh gear are still working. That means the PTO is still working.
If it will will not drive the rear wheels in 5th gear (as it would when starting out in that gear) then the issue is in the output shaft It has the differential pinion on it, or in the differential. (if it has a hand clutch aftermarket device that could be broken)
With it running and in 4th gear, (I assume not moving) step on the brakes. If that loads the engine, the issue is in the fina drives and or a broken axle. Let us know from these tests. Jim

Setting out side in a snowstorm probably froze the tranny going to need to pull the top off the tranny to realy see what happened.

Fiirs thting I'd do, when it is warm, put a bucket under the rear drain plug, SLOWLY remove the plug, see how much water comes out. That is likely all ice below 32 degrees. Locked everything up solid.

Could be anything. Unfortuntely, we don't have long-distance X-ray vision to help you out.

I don't mean that in a mean way. It's just reality. A lot of times you just can't know what's broke until you take it apart and actually look.

You've got the right idea, and a good start in dropping the hydraulic unit and checking on the input shaft. Unfortunately it wasn't the easy fix.

Like the others have said, now it's time to pull the cover off the transmission...
