72 cub lowboy info

I just purchased a barn find lowboy with a belly mower from Craigslist. I figured for $500.00, not running but complete, with good tires that I couldn't go wrong. The engine is free, but wouldn't crank over when I used a jumper battery. I took off the covers and found that it uses a starter/generator. I am not at all familiar with that setup. I know that I am going to need to at the very least rewire the tractor. I tried a jumper battery to the terminal on the gen from solenoid. It did crank over, but seemed to crank slow. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on this system? I have another cub that I use daily, but it is a 62 that uses a starter and has been converted over to 12v and a one wire alt. Thanks, Ted

Believe it's the same system as the Cub Cadets use. It's basically a generator which motors to start the engine. After starting, it functions as a generator to charge the battery.
You will have to check the gen. for brush length & see what the condition of the commutator is. I had to put a set of brushes in my Cub Cadet last year after probably 30 years of use.

you have a 154 Cub Lo Boy ..if the starter/generator is toast, with a little work you can add a starter for a standard Cub. The 185 used a bendix starter and alternator.
