Farmall M/SM with under tank battery

I'm cleaning up the wiring on my SM and I'm going to replace the terminal loop on the ground strap since it's in pretty rough shape. The PO grounded batter to one of the bolts that used to hold down the belt drive. The problem is due to the bolt be fairly large he drilled the loop out so there was hardly anything left.

Where were they originally grounded? There's some smaller bolts holding down the tank support, other then that unless you are going to run a long cable there's not a lot of options that wouldn't require me to drill out the loop again.

Thanks,

K

I like to ground to one of the starter mounting bolts. It takes a bit
of filing to open up the hole but usually not much in my experience.

Didn't think of that but that seems like the ticket.

I'll have to make up a longer cable but that's not a huge deal.

The original ground WAS one of the bolts that held the belt pulley assembly. 1/2 - 13 if memory is correct. The original ground was an insulated cable not a strap. Make up your own cable with welding cable or heavy duty battery cable from NAPA. While you are at NAPA get a battery cable lug with a 1/2 hole in it. If you ground to a starter bolt you will need a lug with a 1/2 inch hole as well unless it is a late SM with the three bolt starter.

The other thing you can sometimes do is turn the battery around so
the grounded terminal is toward the starter and the hot terminal is
toward the switch. That has worked for me to help keep the cables
short.

re-wire both sides with 4ot thru a night switch on
the ground side and call it a day. you ll not only
save the battery, but also won t burn down ur
barn.....just sayin , and that s what i do..
