Disc Brake repair on SH

I was told you could repair worn brake housing tolerance on disc brake assemblies by replacing the steel balls in the actuator plates. I don't think I have seen that discussed before. Where would you find larger steel balls??

The runners/ramps are fit to the existing balls. Enlarging them is possible, but not easy at all, would need CNC programming. The easiest is to machine the mounting face of the housing to reduce the gap. The total stack with new disks should be measured then ad .030 to 040 to this Number to get the machined height of the housing. Jim

I have never actually done this, but I have been wondering for some time if replacing the standard balls with slightly oversize ones would work. Hardened, alloy steel balls in 1/32" size increments are available from McMaster-Carr, for example, and cost less than a buck a pop in sizes near 3/4", which I think is around the size needed. Like I said, I've never tried it, but for a few dollars, avoiding the step of machining the existing drums looks like it would be worth a try. Good luck, and if you try it,let us know if it works.

I have done several SH's and SC's, successfully.

New balls are readily available and oversize are not, nor necessary.

I disassemble and bead blast the drum and expansion plates. install new pads, springs and balls. Reassemble dry, adjust, and see how it works.

This assumes that the plates, drum, and bull pinion carrier surfaces aren't scored too badly. If they are scored have them machined.

If it won't adjust properly there is too much wear to the drum and expansion plate surfaces. These are the machined surfaces the pads contact.

The fix for that is to have your machinist remove material from the drum. The external part of the drum that meets the bull pinion carrier. That compensates for the internal wear.
