Super A with C-123 Engine???

I recently purchased a Super A that was a highway mowing tractor. It still has the midmount sickle mower on it. I think this tractor has the C-123 engine because it has a water pump. I thought the C-123 engine did not come out until the Super A-1 and Super C. The serial tag on the seat indicates a Super A model. I cannot find a tag on the engine. Is there another way to match tracor and engine without serial tags?

There are several possible explanations, any or all of which are common.

It could be a replacement block.
It could be that somebody added a water pump.

For instance, I own a 1940 B with the original C-113 block, matching serial numbers and everything. I added a Super C water pump on it about 7 or 8 years ago when I overhauled the engine and installed 3-1/8" diameter sleeves. That is a very easy and common upgrade on these engines.

by memory, may be wrong. check right side of block directly below head, near front, engine serial # should be stamped there

The C-123 and the C-113 have the same outside dimensions and one will bolt up in the place of the other with some modifications. They look the same so do not go by looks. The difference was the bore diameter.

There were some later Super As with water pumps, before the Super A-1 came out, I believe.

I was schooled on that fact a while back by an expert.

If your engine block has this block number 354898R1 it was used by both the later Super A's and Super C's. They will accept an overbore kit to 3.250" giving you 133cid. Super A's from SN 310300-356001 had the C123 block. After SN 356001 they had water pumps. That flat area below No1 sparkplug may be covered in layers of paint and dirt where the engine SN is. I think water pumps could be installed on both the 113 & 123 cid engines. Hal

Nothing in the parts book supports pre-Super A-1's having water pumps installed at the factory. It was not uncommon for a Super A (not a Super A-1) to receive a water pump in later years, particularly if it was worked hard or otherwise having heating issues. Usually all they did was remove the lower radiator pipe from the front of the block, and the water pump bolted in place.

Since everything else was still set up for thermosyphon cooling, there was no thermostat, the pump just made the water move.
