Last Saturday I was on a 29 mile tractor ride. I real nice gentleman looked at my SH stage II when we parked for lunch. He said I had a PTO assembly off an earlier tractor.
Does this look like the correct pto for SH stage II?
The lower is on 53 SH that I have mower on. They look the same to me.

Looks just like the pto on my '53 SH. But mine is a stage 1(belly pump, battery under the gas tank).

If that's the one you bought from paul in westminster it is correct, don't pay any attention who don't know their a** from a hole in the ground. I had a guy jump on me a few weeks back because my exhaust is on the wrong side on my M to bads its a MD and that's where the exhaust was. Jim.

There were only 2 styles used on the Hs. The very early style with the smaller diameter shaft, and then the later style such as you have. The later style continued right up through the Super Hs. The Farmall 300 also used that later style, but the 300 also offered the optional, independent PTO.

I may be off a little. The independent PTO may not have been available until the introduction of the Farmall 350.

Indepemdent PTO was available(standard?) on 300.I had one,brother-in-law still has two .In fact, never seen a 300 that did not have ipto.

Seems like I have seen 1 or 2 300s with the late H style pto, although I really don't know why anyone would order up a brand new 300 WITHOUT the IPTO.

(quoted from post at 10:15:51 10/05/13) There were only 2 styles used on the Hs. The very early style with the smaller diameter shaft, and then the later style such as you have.

Technically, there were three different PTO assemblies used on the H model. There was also another style used for a short period that looked very similar to the first style on the outside but the engagement inside was changed from the dog clutch type to the later spline style clutch.

The serial number break down is as follows:

Type 1 501 to 45613
Type 2 45614 to 117999
Type 3 118000 and up.

Tractors originally equipped with the second style could be upgraded to the later style by just changing the PTO assembly. Tractors originally equipped with the original style generally needed the later style transmission counter shaft to use the later style PTO assemblies.

There was an adapter that could be used to convert the dog clutch style counter shaft to the later style but I don't know how well they would work once the shaft was worn out. The ones I converted would not stay engaged because of too wear on the dog clutch. Since the counter shaft had to come out to be repaired it was easy to just upgrade to the later style shaft.

Jim , it is the one I got from Paul. I have to say it ate the rode up on the tractor ride. on the last 3/4 mile we hit 4 lane and I took the fast lane and opened her up. Green ones can't go that fast.
