Wheels, mud, and a scraper I hate.

When I bought my M is had a mud scraper on the front so I left it. It is my loader tractor so I use it daily.

I hate that scraper! I am going to rip that thing off. It only serves as a place for mud to pile up - all the way to the bolster.
Were they really a good thing to have or just something folks like to have for shows? I would be disappointed if I bought it.

I am thinking of setting the front wheels out one step (tricycle front) so that mud and snow can get out. Has anyone seen this help the situation? I can't leave that mud in there as it catches twine and junk, so I just spent an hour with the hose. I have always used M's for my loader tractor but I hate working in the hog pens for just this reason. I just love them for the maneuverability.

In my opinion they are very good for a small range of soil conditions and types. Other than that they are either not doing anything, or as described, clogs things up. Jim

Set those front wheels out as wide as they will go. Yes, it will steer hard, but you can"t steer it when the mud is packed tight between the wheels either. The IH engineers intended for those wheels to be set where ever the owner needed them, without doing any damage to the hubs or spindles.

The scrapers were made for mounted cornpickers when you could not use a wide front. Without the scraper pretty soon you had one large donut of mud and the wheels would slide. Take yours off and see how you get along. I have a loader tractor with a narrow front too but it's no good in mud. (not that we ever get much mud here)
