IH 140 questions

I'm going to look at a 140 hi-crop tomorrow and I know nothing about them. Owner is selling due to health issues and doesn't want it to fall apart sitting in the barn. If it cranks, runs good and moves thru the gears OK, what else should I look for? It has a full set of cultivators, belly plow, and a planter attachment. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Your biggest challenge will be to gather up all the parts for the cultivators and planter etc. since you are not familiar with the attachments. It would be nice to have someone along that would know the implements. I bought a set of cultivators for an SC once and the axel brackets were left off the wheel plows. The seller did find them . . . on his SC he was keeping. If you drive away and leave anything essential it will get scrapped, that is according to Murphy. Make sure he gives you all the stuff he has stored around that would go with the tractor.

Thanks for the replies. The pictures show the cultivators to be on the tractor and the planter attachment is optional to buy. I'll make sure to poke around and look for possible extra cultivator parts. If it doesn't appear the planter is complete I'll opt out because I don't really need it anyway. The owner told me the steering on these could be an issue but this one is good. Even if it isn't a rebuild should be possible. I want this tractor for cultivation only on a 2 row setup. The wheels will open wide enough to cover 2 rows won't they?

Thanks,

Scott

They aren't really made for doing two rows. But depending on the width of the rows I guess it will work. That's why IH came out with the super C and the 200,240,504,and so on.They make a better two row cultivating tractor. But don't get me wrong the 140 is a great tractor ,I have 3 of them and I really like them.

I went, I saw, I bought. It fired right off, shifted as expected, and stopped when you pressed the brakes :). Front and rear hydraulics work properly and it has 3 good tires and one questionable (front). It came with 2 sets of cultivators and a complete planter assembly. My plan is to open the wheels out to their max and put a basket weeder/cultivator underneath. I'm sure to have more ?'s now that I got one.

Thanks for the replies,

Scott
