1440 fuel question

I have a good starting 1440 combine that quite quickly seems to have a fuel drain back issue. If it sits over night it requires a little cranking to get fuel to the pump and then it starts and runs great. If it sits for a week or two I have to loosen the injector lines at the pump and crank to get it bled and then it starts and runs good. I don't see any leaks and have owned this machine for 10 yrs and that problem never occurred till this summer. Just wondering if anyone might know how to correct this problem. Thanks, Rod.
 
I had the same problem with a Case combine (gasoline engine) many years ago. The gas tank was mounted low on the machine with the engine a good 6 or 7 feet higher.

Apparently a fuel line fitting - or the suction side of fuel pump - had a tiny leak. It was not large enough to leak fuel out, but enough to let air to leak in when under a slight vacuum - ie. when shut down. So whenever the combine sat for more than a day or so, the leak would let the fuel in the line drain back to the tank making the next startup difficult.

Solution was to install a quarter turn ball valve in the fuel line close to to the tank. By closing the valve after shutting down for the day, fuel was held in the line. The next cold start would now be easy - even if the machine had sat for several weeks/months.
 
Does the hand primer leak when you pump it and pumping it should be all that is needed to refill the head of the pump. If it leaks externally it may allow leak down. Also, there should be an o-ring on the outside of that hand pump that seals when you tighten the bail. Could be the check valve in the charge pump.
