Behlen Power Steering

[b:8570c6dc1a]Please be patient with me on all my questions. If I add Behlen power steering unit to my 300, can I run it off my live hydraulics or do I need another pump and reservoir?

You would need to install a priority valve to split off your hydraulics into two circuits, one for the power steering, one for the main hydraulics. Priority output goes to steering, of course.

Find the case ih parts on line lookup. put in model 300. then find farmall 300. Click on that and then attachments. Go to number 359 and the way IH did the power steering will come up. You can get a better idea of what's needed by going to farmall 400 then attachments # 444 picture. They are the same except for attaching shafts, mounting straps, hose lengths and return hose into reservoir location.
I wouldn,t give very much for one of those priority valves without a return guarantee because a lot of them are worn and don't work correct now.
Or you could fabricate a priority valve into the existing pressure line from the pump.

I would agree with these other guys, the key is a good priority valve and they are almost impossible to find--good ones I mean. If I had it to do over again I would have plumbed in a modern, aftermarket priority valve, in place of the factory one. It wouldn"t be that difficult if you know how to "rig" things. Good luck and remember, it"s not just about the pump and the actuator, it"s also about the priority valve. Hugh

Tractor Supply has them, so I imagine other farm supply places do too. Cessna used to make some good ones, but don't know what they (Eaton) currently make. Mail order places like Northern Hydraulics also has them. Need one that is sized to handle the capacity of the pump, and is either adjustable or splits off about 2 to 2.5gpm for the PS on the priority side.

In the IH set up the priority valve is in the block that bolts on the steering support post toward the front of the tractor and replaces the one already there. Also contains the pressure regulator and safety valve system. Also need the control valve that goes to the support post and a passage plug. Also fittings and a U shaped pipe.
Yes they can be rebuilt.
Aftermarket priority valves come in various shapes, sizes and pressure ratings and would need to be plumbed into the existing line from the pump to the reservoir. Then the pressure outlets plumbed to the steering unit and hydraulic pressure line. Return line from the steering unit would go to the drain opening on the reservoir. If its a priority valve with its own relief valve a extra line would need to go to the return.

I have a 350 farmall with behlen & priority valve, I also have a 450 farmall with behlen & a dedicated pwr. steer pump. The steering is better on the 450

I have a 300 with stock power steering. It is ok to turn right but the left turn is hard. Many years ago we put an additional pump mounted on the left front side of the engine behind the already live pump. It takes a little doing because the distributor needs to be mounted on this pump. Some guys did a 90 degree adapter. This way the hydraulics are separate from the power steering and both work great. The divider system is really a poor method for the steering!! That was so long ago I cannot give you details but I know of a guy who has done it recently and has talked to me about doing mine. So if you need help let me know.

New priority valves are still available at Northern
Hydraulics for approx. $140. They work well and are
easy to pipe up.
