WOT trouble with A

I have been having on and off problems with my A surging, stalling, and just acting up at WOT and high RPMs but idles and runs at lower RPMs fine. What happens is when I first start it it runs fine at all speeds, after a few minutes it won't run at higher RPMs without the choke on even when fully warmed up. It seems to get worse as it warms up. However it will idle just fine with the choke open, but rev it up past half speed it will surge and die if the choke isn't closed.

The carburetor is brand new, the floats are adjusted to the correct height. This A has a Pertronix kit so no points or condenser to cause trouble. The sediment bowl is clean, I don't see any dirt in it.

One of my IH repair manuals states that the idle mixture can affect WOT performance. I tried adjusting the iudle mixture at WOT and it only temporarily cured the WOT problems. The idle mixture now doesn't have any effect at WOT.

New is good. It may be that the fuel is just not getting to the carb, or through the needle and seat fast enough to supply the demand. it could also have new dirt in the carb main jet system. The fact that the idle mix screw no longer has an effect, is indicating dirt. I would put a thin wire through each passage and then follow with carb cleaner.
A failing coil can make the symptoms you describe. Not as likely as dirt, but possible. Jim

The fuel seems to be flowing though the line okay. I cleaned out the carb a couple of weeks ago when I suspected a bad needle valve but it doesn't leak. Could a sticking needle valve cause such problems?

The coil is a pertronix epoxy filled coil. The contacts look a little rusty so I will try cleaning them.

Other thing is I am suspecting that the bumper surge spring could be worn out. If it is would it cause the problems I have been having?

Bumper probably not.
Shut off the fuel at the tank. Remove the fuel bowl with carb still on the engine. Lift the float with finger pressure only. Turn on fuel. Put a can under the carb and lower the float to see fuel flow. it should come out strong and continue for 30 seconds or more, with no reduction in flow.
It should flow an equivalent 1/8" to 3/16" stream.
There is a strainer at the carb! Let us know. Jim

i have trouble with c farmall each spring. the valve aaaaaa(fuel shut-off), below the gas tank gets a bit of trash in it and will not let fuel flow as it should. low rpms o k, high rmps not so good.
