1566 Steering problem

Son was out plowing yesterday with 1566 and the steering wheel locked up. The front wheels started going left to right to the limit and the steering wheel was still locked up.
Any ideas on where to start checking?
Thanks, Richard in NW SC

That is a new one on me but it would have to be in the steering hand pump. (unit steering wheel is splined to ).

All the information on operation and repair of that hand pump is contained in the service manual. Major disassembly of that unit is not for the faint of heart. Older model units like on an 806 were a piece of cake but they didn't contain any valve as that was a separate unit.

Sounds more like the pilot valve down by the starter than the hand pump. If one side goes bad it will turn the wheels one way only. Also I can then see it locking the steering too. Since the pilot valve controls the flow from side to side.

The 66 series have all the valveing in the hand pump, no separate valve like older model tractors had.

I don't know about the currently available manuals but the older individual ones that I have do have a section on the hand pump itself. I've never compared it to the IH manual since those are the ones I use for IH tractors.
