simple hidden kill switch Farmal H

Would someone know where to hide a kill switch on my h battery ignition. for theft purposes. and how would I hook it up? Thanks for all answers

You could put a simple on/off switch in the wire to the coil. You could mount it on the rear fuel tank support above the starter switch.

As was said,a simpole on/off switch on the coil wire would do it.Just hide the switch in a convienent place under the hood that only you know where it is.Or you could simply put a on/off key switch on it.

You can mount a master switch in the ground leg of your battery. That will isolate the battery from being grounded. You could just pulled the rotor and just reinstall it when you want to use the tractor. Hal
PS: The military has used master switches for years.

I have one of those light-bar tool-boxs from this site, mounted onl ight bar, and I have a battery main disconnect mounted underneath it, I just remove the key. Can"t see it. [can"t type, got left-hand injuries; bench grinder hide reolval on finger finger, framaing hammer impact on ring finger, folded up the post hole digger and alomst cut off pinky, some other grinder hide removal on knuckles. gonna relax for a day or 2.]

If someone wants it, they are going to get it. Having said that, they may just be smart enough to run a wire to the coil and start it up. Chances are they wont carry a battery with them, unless its like at a show or something, so take the battery out. Its on an H, so its not really that big of a deal to do.

i guess you could use a key switch and take the key. But when I was young and foolish I had a pair of wires with alligator clips. I could "borrow" any car I wanted. (that was before locking steering columns)

I really like your thinking on this. I'd never thought of doing this. A thief would probably work all day and never figure out the problem

I think the best way is to run a wire from the points side of the coil to a grounding switch. Even if he hot wires it will not start. Sure, he can cut the wire off but he most likely will think that wire has some important reason he does not understand if he notices it.

I've heard that one should not fire a magneto without providing a path to ground. Old wive's tale?
My question is: can I replace the coil wire of a magneto with a piece of black vacuum hose without hurting the magneto upon an attempt to start the engine?

Thanks, Hendrik

my vote too, for a switched wire that grounds the points.
attaching right at the points and coming out of the distributor-magneto gives you more hiding places for the switch.

add some decoys, like taking the coil wire or battery.
the bad guys will think another trip with parts will get it....wrong

add a small sign on the tractor somewhere, that says,
smile, your picture has just been taken by a game camera

Not the best practice. on a mag tractor, a second wire to a hidden switch then to ground will be effective.
THe mag can form an internal trace of carbon from arcing inside. It can be hard to diagnose and can result in a failed coil insulation.
A coil can be dammaged but will usually flash over to the small terminals doing no harm.
A stolen or kid driven tractor is much worse than even a failed mag, but a coil es easy to replace. Jim

I know off subject a bit and some don't like that, BUT, speaking of game camera's. Some one stole one of mine. I put a little note in my other camera's that reads, you have been photographed by at least two other camera's while taking this one so if you just bring it back the sheriff won't have to know about it.

Well, someone already posted it, but the simple and easy way is to remove the coil wire/lead. a thief won't necessarily be carrying one of those, and it is not easily bypassed.

I had my F150 stolen at one point. They removed the ignition (easy to do on the 70's F150s). I was lucky and got it back a couple of days later. Insurance covered the "missing" parts and I was on the road again.

After that, I simply took the coil wire with me wherever I would park it. It was never stolen again. Not sure if anyone tried, but if someone did try, they were not successful.

Thieves see the coil wire is missing and just pull one spark plug wire and use that for coil wire. My old boss always insisted we pull coil wires off the tractors in the lot so know how that worked.

Can you pull it out so it looks connected, but will really not fire?
