Going to try and save a 574.

I have to bleed the brakes about once a month so I presume the master cylinder is leaking. Is there a kit available or do I have to buy new units?

This is a cold blooded tractor and only has an ether injector, which I hate. Is there a simple way to add on an electric block heater? or will it need a circulating pump.

Probably more questions to come.

Hi Bill, re brakes, could be one of many problems.
1)Lack of hydraulic oil for PB master cylinders. Later 84 series models had a plastic hydraulic oil reservoir for PB master cylinders.
2)Worn and leaky PB master cylinders.
3)Leaking PB hydraulic lines from master cylinder to wheel cylinders. Remove sheet metal cover over transmission and check for leaks.
4)Most likely, Leaking PB wheel cylinders O-rings.
Do a leak down test, bleed brakes and make sure both brakes are solid before shutting tractor off. Leave tractor a day or two, then before starting engine, test each brake individually to see if one or both have lost their prime.

Re block heater, best is recirculating heater, connect top hose to front of water jacket on exhaust side of engine and bottom hose to drain plug above the starter.

Re starting, are you using the START position on the STOP/START/RUN lever? The decal usually falls off and owners are unaware of START position.

Jim, thank you! I am aware of the starting position on the run/stop lever. If the air temp is below 40, this tractor will not start and I hate to use the ether. That recirculating heater doesn't sound like too bad a job, where do you get one?

Brakes could be part of my hyd. fluid leak, are repair kits available for the master cyl and wheel cyl? My IT repair manual looks like there is one master cyl. and an equalizer valve, is that right?

We are going to put in a clutch so will split the tractor, will that make working on brakes easier?

Hi Bill,
How many hours on engine or is hour meter not functioning? The D-239 was always a hard starter in the cold. The newer versions had higher compression pistons that helped starting in the cold.
Re hyd fluid leak from under dash, could be PS pump or PB system. There are actually two master cylinders, one for each brake with an equalizer valve between the two. Unfortunately to fix leaky wheel brake cyl O-rings you have to remove the axle. Splitting tractor will only help a little with brake repairs as master cyls are under battery box.

Bill, forgot about the recirculating tank heaters.
We bought a couple at auto parts store but just google: engine recirculating tank heaters.

Depending were you live and your requirements there are different wattage of heaters. If you want to leave the tractor plugged in all the time on a timer then a 500W heater is probably good. If you just want to plug it in for 30 Min before start then a 1500W heater is better.
