Farmall M serial # L 501040. The book I used says this is a 1953 Louisville. Is this correct and could someone explain what the Louisville means vs. one that isn"t? Thank you!!

Because they also were built at the tractor works in the Quad city area. Production started in Louisville in 47 with the A series and B series later SA and Cs then SMs SCs

Assembled at the IH Louisville plant in August of 1952. SM tractors built at the Farmall works used a 5 digit serial number or less. All Louisville ones were 6 digit numbers.
Also some info shows 54 models built at Louisville but the last ones built there were in July of 53.

There is a "Serial Numbers" reference on the left side of this page too.

According to that, the first serial number for 1953 Louisville production is L501906. That makes yours a 1952.

Either you misread the book you used, or it is wrong.

Louisville means Louisville, KY. IH started producing tractors there in the late '40s during the post-war farming boom

Super M's were built in Louisville only in 1952-1953. Serials 500001-512541, no Super MTA's.

I meant that the Louisville SM's were built only in 52 and 53. I was not talking about the rest, only the ones built in Louisville. I have one of them.
