On my M if I let it set for more than a couple of days without starting it. I have to remove the starter from the block and put it back in in order for it to turn the engine over. I have looked a the teeth on the fly wheel and the bendix drive, all look good.I am miffed as to what it is doing. I can turn the engine over with the crank and it will make no difference. Once I take it out and put it back in it will turn the engine over and start. I have tried running a separate ground to no avail. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have ever tried to clean where the starter mounts and use clean bolts with lock washers. It sounds like its not grounding.

If the starter does nothing but make one small click like noise, then refuses to work, it is a problem with the pinion (starter drive). A new and improved cushion drive with a smaller spring and better tooth design and engagement, is the answer. These are sold by most suppliers and are very different that the old style. It will Be a good answer to the non start issue. Jim

Can"t exactly tell, but make sure you"ve grounded the battery terminal directly over TO the starter mount bolt. Eliminate all the resistences of frame joints, bolts, washers, etc. Make sure ALL washers / locknuts / bolts / etc. are sparkling clean. I could not get my H to even turn over, and it was as simple as doing all that, and she really up and spins now.

Try using a booster pack or jumper cables to bypass the starting circuit (make sure its out of gear). That would rule out problems with the starter. I"m betting the problem is with one of the connections and not the starter. It starts after you removed the starter because you also moved the cables/connections in the process.

My 450 did that for a while, I learned I could wiggle the cables and it would take off. My fix was new cables and new crimp on connectors.

Take the band off starter when this happens. Reach inside starter with a dull tool, preferably plastic or wood, and turn armature a bar or two. May have a dead spot on armature or just worn out brush's. This is if trying other suggestions do not get you going.
