Brake adjustment

I unhooked the brake lock so I could spin the tractor around easier while packing the driveway/road and I found I have next to no right brake and very little left brake. Together they will stop the tractor but I have to put it to the floor.

I have a M&W hand clutch, does this change the way you adjust the brake per the service manual? how do you check the brake band on the hand clutch side? should I replace the exterior springs, they look and feel old? thanks guys, ~Anthony

I do not know about the M+W and how that affects it, I think it should still work the same but I am not sure. The horizontal spring is just for pedal return, if it works and is not broken or obviously about to break I would keep it. I would try to adjust the brakes per the manual and if that does not help I would open it up and look at the bands for wear.

This might help, might not; IF the "M" is like the "H", you first loosen the locknut on the bottom of the brake housing, then tighten up the square-head screw til the brake band touches the brake drum, then loosen it down 3/4 turn or so. Tighten back up the locknut. Do both sides. Then you check to see how much free travel the brake pedal has to touch the tramsission case. You are looking for 1 1/2" free travel or so. Remove the cotter pin and the pin, and screw in/out / up/down the top clevis, until you get it right, reinstall pin and cotter pin. YOu have to have the brakes pull evenly at speed; go down the road with them latched together, put on brakes, and she should pull straight ahead, NOT right or left. Readjust as necessary. THis is the "H" procedure, and by golly, it might work on the "M" too.
