The original subject was "Re: Coil Question".

thanks helpful, but with switch on the coil has spark on both + and - posts and with switch off no spark via ground with pig tail wore to tractor body. when turning the engine points never move and are close the whole time. all new wire on the ignition as how I got the tractor, so I believe its points and condes or the coils itself?

Does the shaft that to rotor is one spin??? If yes then your points maybe bad. If no the gear that drives that shaft if bad. Now days common to have cheap points that the rubbing block is soft so it does not last long so the points do not open like they should. Points HAVE to open and close to have spark so no open and no close no spark

Well, spark occurs at the instant the points OPEN, and you say your"s aint open"in... "spose that could have something to do with the problem?

Check out the link below for a good explanation of ignition system theory...

With the switch on and a tractor just settin there not running the points are normally CLOSED

SOOOOOOOO a test lamp on the coils input (NOT to distributor) terminal would lite up indicating hot voltage BUT over on the coils output (To distributor) terminal the lamp will not light cuz the points are closed and that coil terminal is effectively (if points closed and good) shorted to ground and grounded out.

The points MUST open and close as the distributor shaft and its high and low cam lobes contact the points mechanism cam follower ARE THEY????????????

If you put a test lamp on the coils to distributor terminal with ign on and crank the engine over, the lamp should flash ON (when points open) and OFF (when points are closed)

For a good detailed systematic procedure to determine the cause of no spark, work through my Troubleshooting Procedure linked below, didnt I alreadt post this on another page?? I forget lol
