diesel knocking

My 364 diesel started knocking and quit. I thought I'd thrown a rod, however, with the oil pan off, everything is connected and going up and down. The oil pick up screen was covered in sludge as was the bottom of the oil pan. Would poor oil pick up cause knocking without visible breakage? Thanks

well it could be a faulty injector also, they can make a real hard knocking sound if not atomizing the fuel.
to be sure its not a rod better check for clearance by removing them or at least giving them a shake to see if one is loose. just visually looking is somtimes hard to tell. usually they will turn blue from the heat also.the screen being plugged is not good as it could be starving for oil. once the brg. is hot and worn out breakage usually will happen if continued to run engine.

didn't run out of fuel, but it did get hot while bush hogging and the radiator got clogged. I've changed the oil regularly since I've had it. Didn't realize there was so much sludge.

What rusted said no real way to tell without pulling a cap and checking clearances. Things cold knock and still look OK.

just had the same kind of issue with our 186 it got a little warm one day and then started to make a knocking sound after pulling the pan and a couple of brgs no problems there, i pulled the head and found the 2nd piston was scored, i never would have thought a scored pison would knock but it did.

Any coolant in the oil? This is a wet sleeve engine if I remember correctly. You could of had a sleeve cavitate thru. When that happened to my 1066 the coolant caused the piston to score the sleeve. The aluminum that melted into the sleeve actually sealed the hole in the sleeve back up but the engine had a loud knock. There was no coolant in the oil on my tractor.

First place to look when you have a knock and engine dies is in the oil filter. Any bearing material will immediately show up in there and lots of time any aluminum from a piston will also. Normally when a piston goes you get a sudden pulsing increase of blow by in the crankcase breather tube.
