1954 Farmall 400 Diesel Injection pump leaks

I have a 1954 Farmall 400 Diesel Injection pump that is leaking out of the shaft that engages the pump when the tractor is switched from gas to diesel. It leaks more when the tractor is off. Is there a bushing or packing in there?

The pump needs new seals inside. For now you can pull the drain plug on the bottom of the pump to let all of that fuel out of there, then put it back in and open the petcock and pour oil in the top until it starts to drip out the petcock then close it back up and you can run it like that, BUT every time you use it, after you shut it off open that petcock to let the excess oil/fuel out. After a while the oil will get very thin from the fuel so you will have to change it again.

hard to tell what you are referring to, leasking diesel or oil? talking about throttle shaft? but anyhow if you are getting a raise in the oil compartment then its the diesel transfer pump that has leaking seals. if its the throttle shaft leaking then need new seal there.

I tried posting a picture

Yes a bushing and seal. Bad news is the Pump needs to be almost completely disassembled to replace them.

Unless you know a buddy that can do it or you can, yes it will probably be in the 800 to 1000 range. Long time since I tried to find the parts for one or know the cost of parts. So can't really say.

If that"s a B series pump (no scavenging valve and pump)then the drain tube in the bottom is probably plugged with dirt and the leakage fuel from the valves is building up in there and overflowing. Run a piece of wire up through the drain tube and you will probably get dirt and a rush of diesel fuel out of it. The pump can then drip out the leakage fuel and it won"t be finding its way out the throttle shaft.

If it's the same one as in the picture, it is. It doesn't have a scavenging valve out the lower body of the pump. Run a wire up that short drain pipe out of the bottom of the pump and see what you get out.
