Farmall M engine

Today I bought an engine from a farmall m minus the head. I
was wondering how much it weighs and is it safe to put it on
an automotive engine stand? When I picked it up from the bed
of my truck with the cherry picker,it seemed heavier than a lot
of the car engines I have handled. I have a 1940 M with a
badly stuck engine and this one was running six weeks ago.

It will weigh no more than a long block Chevy 6 or small block V8(the heads on). It does have a massive fly wheel, but that should be off when mounting on a stand. Unless it is a cheap or weak home made stand it will be OK. Jim

There are a couple types of engine stands. I had a SMTA engine on the heavier type once and was ok, I don't think the lighter ones would hold it

Thanks for the info,I intend to pull the head off my old engine and run it through the machine shop and use it on this engine. I will use a heavier engine stand. The engine I bought ran good had good oil pressure and no smoke. It has fire crater pistons, cylinders look good with no ridge. Po wanted the head for his tractor.

If the tractor is away from any building you can pull the head and oil pan. Remove anything flammable and pour kerosene on top of a piston and set it on fire. Remove the rod cap on that piston and see if the piston can be driven out with a piece of 2 x 2 oak and a big hammer. Hal

I had my Super M engine on a Farm/Fleet stand and I was scared of it, used a block of wood from the pulley to the front of the stand.
