im looking at a international 484 diesel. Its at an auction but i am able to start it and look it over good. I just wanted some extra advice on what to look for/what to avoid etc. I cranked it up already and it started easy...i could not find a hand control only a foot control that cannot be set in one place , and it was broken.Worked but broken. I assume there is one someplace...???? Can someone explain the gear setting to. Nothing was marked, i am assuming its off to the left. ----I could have played around with it more and figured it out im sure but its a new to me piece of equiptment and i was in a gravel auction lot with lots of other stuff.Prefer to be sure first.

Hi James,
Throttle control should be lever on dash on right side of steering column. If there is similar lever on left side of steering column that is T/A control, forward is direct drive, back is low.
Re gear shift levers: could be two different styles, old style: lever has 4 positions, gears 1 to 4, 1 being at top rear and 4 being at bottom, the other lever selects Rev, Neutral, Low all the way forward and Hi half way down and towards drivers seat.
New style has lever for 1-2 and 3-4 in H pattern and other lever is Rev, Neutral, Hi. Low.

Re weakness, power brakes and parking brake.
Check PB individually for being "spungy". Could be caused by leaking PB cylinder O-rings.
Check parking brake for holding ability. Problem is Operator could have driven tractor with parking brake engaged and chewed up parking brake band in the diff and all the bits will clog up the hydraulic filter.
Pull the dip stick and check the crankcase oil for smelling like Diesel fuel. Could have the front drive shaft on injection pump leaking Diesel fuel into crankcase.
Otherwise a very good 40HP tractor and the German made D-179 engine will run a long time if properly maintained.

ok cool. Thanks.--I remember that lever and considered it but it had the little rabbit/turtle symbols and thought it was a hi/lo lever. It is the old style gearing on it.

I dont think i will be able to test the parking brake as it is on a flat surface. Im not sure that i will ever need it anyway to be honest. Im sure it would come in handy sometime but i think i could live without it.
Im assuming the inj pump would have to be taken to a specialist to fix that leak ?---if it is leaking
This tractor has a front end loader on it as well...any reason why it wouldnt work well on this tractor? A bucket and a hay fork. I am assuming it handled round bales ok.

What would one of these be worth without the leak...and with a leak? -------i understand theres many different variables to this question just give it your best shot if you dont mind.

Hi James,
Re, injection pump possibly leaking, the seal was about $10.00 but the pump has to be removed and it can be replaced by someone that is good with wrenches but if it is leaking around throttle control lever then requires pump shop attention.
To prevent front seal leaking, add Diesel fuel conditioner or a couple of tablespoons of 2 cycle motor oil every time you add Diesel fuel.

Re front end loader, yes it should lift round bales, may have to add weight to rear of tractor if the rear tires are not fluid filled. If the loader has double acting cylinders it should easily lift the front end of tractor of the ground.

As per price, it depends on your area.

you mean i cant get ya to hold my hand on the price huh?..I dont blame ya. I have a pretty good idea of what its worth i just keep getting that sick feeling when i am about to spend money.

JIM i really appreciate you answering my questions. If i get it i will probably have some more, probably regarding pump timing marks :)---thanks man.
