Hello everyone, I just done some trading today and got a 1951 Farmall Cub! I absolutely love it, I mow 2 acres and thats what I plan to do with it. I'm going to be on here asking questions a lot I'm sure, I don't know a whole lot about the tractor yet. Po said it has rust in gas tank and it sure dos, it stopped up and died about 3 times on the way home with it. I plan on taking the tank off and cleaning it out. Any tips on that I would sure appreciate. My other question is when I engage the PTO it won't go all the way back and gears grind and I have to hold it to stay in gear any tips on how to fix that I would appreciate! Thanks
 
To start, Look at the PTO lever. To engage you need to press down on the little lever and slide it back. Dose it have the metal shield with a slot with round ends for the lever to lock into?
Those levers sometimes get rusty and won't spring up to lock.
If all is good there, I would remove the top cover from the transmission and have a look at what is going on.
 
Yea the spring is wore out,I messed around with it and the PTO lever seems to go all the way back when the engine is turned off but it wouldn't go all the way back with engine running! I hope I don't have a clutch problem. Maybe this evening I can take the cover off and get a closer look.
 
If you have a local radiator shop I would take the tank to them to have it cleaned and sealed. It seems like they have better chemicals to clean the rust than we can get our hands on. Good luck, Mark.
 
Question: Are you pressing the clutch in before you are trying to shift the pto lever? After you push in the clutch let the moving gears slow down for a second before shifting. The pto is not like a garden tractor with a v belt. This could be the problem. Or maybe not lol.
 
Ya I'm pressing the clutch in, I tried working the clutch in and out while I held back on the PTO lever but it wouldn't go all the way back or the spring on the lever wouldn't pop up.
