Proper way to grease 48 H

front wheels. I likely need to grease them, and don't know how. My 34 Case has grease caps that screw on. When I had F-20s/30s they had a grease zerk for the fronts, as does my 39 A JD, but the 48 H don't.
 
On the H you have to take them apart and clean the bearings and repack them. I put grease zerks on sides of my caps on the Farmall B, M and 450 and give them 5 or 6 pumps of grease once or twice a year.
 
Couple of things I always gforget on my "H" is the clutch throwout bearing and the drive-shaft pilot bearing [line up the timing mark, locate the grease fitting at the bottom.]
 
Why? The front wheel is sealed and as long as the grease does not get released by a bad grease seal it does not need any attention . . . just like your car or truck or trailer. If you add grease zerks it will cause you to over fill the chamber and ruin the grease seal. Where zerks were installed at the factory there was not a decent grease seal on the back side of the wheel bearing. If a bearing goes bad (rare) you will know and can replace the seal, bearings and races as well as the grease at that time. Some say you should remove the bearings, clean and repack as preventive maintenance. It would be my opinion that this type maintenance will not hurt but it is doubtful that it will help either . . . except that you might find and replace a bad grease seal in the off season instead of having to do it in the middle of the spring rush.
 
The seals on the front wheels are not like automotive seals. They are not much more than dust seals. They are not damaged if grease is pushed out past them. It just makes a mess on the inside of the wheel.

I brazed a 1/4-28 nut on the side of the outside cap, drilled a hole through the cap inside the nut, and installed zerks in mine. It takes a lot of grease to fill the hub the first time but after that it only takes a couple of shots.
