460 Chisel Plow Capacity?

Farmers here use chisels (chisel plows) instead of moldboard or disc plows in this VERY heavy soil and try for about 12" spacings and from 6" to 18" deep. How many shanks can the 460 lp pull? (40+hp when new)? Are rigid shanks usable, or do they need to be spring loaded? Also, is it better to use 3 pt or pull-type? I assume depth guage wheels are needed for 3 pt? Thanks for the opinions.

Not wide enough to cover your tracks. Never forget the first chisel plow we sold. Guy had a 450 gas. He traded his 3 bottom moldboard plow in on it and came back next day, picked up his plow and left the chisel.

You will need to get a lot bigger tractor then that to even consider pulling one Minimum 90 horse for a 5 shank, pulled a 7 shank IHcase with a 966 and that was enough.

When I worked in the Cessna engineering lab, we had an AC 7040 (140 engine hp) and pulled a 7 shank 3 point. Got into some alkali soil and dropped 2 shanks off that. You might pull 5 if you only go 6" deep.

Well I guess thats why you drove AC and I drove IH I am located in northeastern ILL and we went a heck of a lot deeper than 6" and I guarantee that in black dirt and clay not bragging.

That is some tough soil to sample. It sticks to the probe different than WI soil. Neither one was real easy last summer.

You may be able to pull 2 shanks, but I wouldn't count on it. The farmers aren't chisel plowing because your soil is really heavy. They are chiseling because it is 2013.

Rigid shanks have a shear bolt rather than a spring that resets them. Kevin B could plow all day and never think about a problem. People with hills and rocks wouldn't even think about buying one.

Alkali when dry is like ripping concrete, when wet it's like grease. The saying around here is you have about 15 minutes between too wet and too dry. We were testing electronic draft control systems, and the brand of tractor really didn't make much difference for what we were trying to learn. And we were going a lot deeper than 6' also. Personally, I never had the chance to operate it in the field, but was involved in making and installing equipment on the tractor.
