F12 project is progressing...

Well, this thing is coming along... slow as it may be.

I got the tank cleaned out.. there was close to 2 inches of varnish in the bottom. I pressure washed it, then soaked in acetone. After that, it was surprisingly clean... no rust to speak of. I coated it today with RedKote.

While I was working on the tank, it fell from the sawhorses and the fuel return brass T broke off... I've not had any luck finding one, so I'm going to braise the old one back one. I don't think it'll look bad.

I've sand blasted the tank and started filling the pitting on the outside. I'll be sanding and finishing the prep work on it tomorrow.

When I got this thing, I also got 4 boxes full of parts for it which included a total of 3 mags and 3 carbs. The carbs were completely nasty... coats of paint and gunked up like crazy. At first glance, none looked like brass so I didn't worry with it and went on with the carb that was already on the tractor.
WELL... I looked a little closer and noticed that one was brass! I started working on cleaning it up yesterday and finished it today. I even got it put on and adjusted.

Before:

After:

Before I swapped the carb out, I had it cranking by hand fairly easy. I had to pull it to get it started this time, and it sounds pretty good to me. The mag is good and hot, and the timing marks are spot on. What can I do to make it easy to crank again???

If you click on this picture, it should play the video.

Thanks in advance for any advice/comments.

looks good. Patience is a virtue. If Rice doesn't have one, you can also check with Rustic Red Acres and /or Nebraska Cowman.

I just got a 30 yr barn find running,37 f-12.
it would pull start but not hand. spark looked hot.checked with a spark tester and would only jump .020 gap, with new points and cond and timing set. replaced ign coil and it hand starts first crank. and spark jumps over .250, give it a try only 60 bucks.

Put the working carb back on. you never said if you rebuilt the brass one or just cleaned it. Something is obviously not right with it or it would not change how the tractor starts. 12's can be very sensitive starters if something is off just a tweak. Also I don't see a new gasket between the carb and manifold, may be a air leak if you reused the old gasket, Should be a fairly thick one in there.

Looking good. Technically you are supposed to use muratic acid to prep the tank after the acetone. Acetone will only take care of varnish and muratic will only take care of rust. Maybe it isn't a big deal if there wasn't much rust.
