3 cylinder gas engine. New plugs, wires, new distributer with new
cap. Will run on 2 cylinders. #1 out of the distributer is completely
dead. Makes no difference where the distributer is rotated. Would
anyone have any idea where to look to cure this? Thank you for
any help. This is on a 1020 deere. I tried on deere forum, was
hoping you all could help.

I distributor system is pretty simple. If it's not hitting on #1, you mean with a spark plug in the wire and the plug grounded, there's no visible arc at the plug? But there is on 2 and 3?

If that's the case, first swap one of your other wires to #1. If #1 now fires but the other doesn't, it's your wire. If it's still #1, then it's your cap or plug.

Swap your plugs. Id it's still #1, then it's your cap.

I realize you just replaced them, but that's the only possibility unless your rotor is oscillating. (which I can't imagine happening and it not be noticeable) I would imagine everyone's gotten at least one new part that was bad out of the box before. I've had more than I can count. AND there's more bad part than there used to be... even from the dealer.

Can you turn it over by hand and watch & make sure the points are opening on all 3 lobes? Maybe the shaft is bent.

I just tried a new cap, no difference. Cam lobe on the points are
opening and closing as it should. Cylinder 2 and 3 working as it
should. I have switched everything I know to do. It does sound
crazy but the distributor is dead coming out of #1.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Any other hints.

New Distributor has a bent shaft below the cap. Received it this way. Now I hope they will make it right. Thanks for the advice.
