1959 Farmall 560 PTO Slips

I bought the 560 a couple of months ago to fill in for my broken round baling tractor. I've only made about 25 bales so far and it seemed OK, but yesterday the PTO started slipping and I had to abort the mission. I've read some on the internet about this, but I don't have a shop manual and don't know how to proceed.

Should I start by changing the oil? Are the 2 square indented plugs on the side oil fill/check plugs?

What about adjusting? I'm guessing the adjusters in the picture below are for adjusting braking and slipping, but which is which and how do you go about adjusting it? The braking part works fine. Thanks!

Your PTO unit looks almost exactly like the one on my 450. You see the two bolts that are slotted with nuts to lock each one? Those two are the keys to your "kingdom", so to speak. If you will give me a call at 318-465-0797, I can talk you through it. But what it amounts to is you are going to loosen each lock nut and turn the slotted bolt inward about one turn (clockwise), re-tighten the locking nuts, and then check it out. The way you check out the pto brake is by getting the lever in between engaged and disengaged, and slipping a foot long piece of 5/16 inch all thread through the hole in the pto output shaft and seeing if you can rotate it. You should just be able to without bending the all-thread. Then, put the lever into the engaged position, and see if you can rotate it. If you can rotate it without bending the all-thread, then the engagement slotted bolt needs another half turn. I think the engagement slotted bolt is the rear one of the two, but I'm not sure. Others may have better memories than I do. Good luck, Hugh

You have the early model pto with the clutch bands which can be adjusted by the two screws and lock nuts on top right. One does the ingaugement and the other is the brake. The two plugs on left side one full, bottom add.Fill with new Hytran oil. When you turn the adjustments clockwise that tightens clutch bands if not its worn out.Mine where burn out took it to a good brake reline shop.

Before trying to readjust the bands make sure that the arm on the operating shaft going into the housing is not slipping. A little movement there will change the adjustment a lot.

Hugh, thanks for the info and offer, I may take you up on the call when I get down to it.

ejr-IA, I'm crossing my fingers that I've got some adjustment. The previous owner was the 2nd. owner, I guess he had it 20 years or more and never used the PTO. Good to know about relining. :) So hydraulic fluid is the modern replacement for the original SAE 10W?

Owen, I did look at that (I wondered if it could be adjusted there), and it looks like it is tight.

Thank you all for the responses! The way my hay season is going I really, really need something, anything, to go right. :(

Both of them. One adjusts the brake band and the other adjusts the drive band.

To tighten the drive band put the PTO in the brake position and adjust the screw that does not have pressure on it. Adjust the brake the same way by having the lever in the engaged position.

As much as your adjusted screws are turned in there probably is not much lining left on the bands.
