I popped the head gasket on my super a and i pulled it down and in the process of pulling head studs i snapped two of them off flush with the holes. i asked a friend of mine and he told me to drill through them and use an extractor , but heat the block up and should spin out . well it spun once and i snapped off extractor. any ideas how to get it out.

There have been some long threads about broken bolt removal here. Google that topic and see if you can't find one. I'm thinking a cobalt bit($$) may drill it out.Try heating the easyout red hot and cool slowly to soften the temper first.

Find someone who can weld an oversize washer, OD that is, to the broken stud and then they can weld a nut to the washer. Have to be careful since this is a machined surface but it can be done.

Once the nut is welded on and has cool for a few minutes it should twist the stud right out.

I quit drilling and using extractors years ago for most applications.

Yes, welding a flat washer and then a nut to the broken stud is the ONLY way to do it. Even if you have to haul the tractor to a welding shop.

I say we start a list of those "tools" that should not be bought or be allowed to be sold. Extractors can be tops on the list!

Davida and Rusty Farmall are right on the money! I have did this several times and it always works . Anyway thats what I would do if it were mine

Whoever told you to use an extractor is no friend.

There is no drill known to man that can drill out an extractor.

The only way to do it without damaging the block is to take it to a machine shop that can do some sort of electrostatic thing that will vaporize the extractor. From what I've heard the cost of that will probably exceed the value of the tractor.

Someone skilled with a TiG welder can build up the end of the bolt, then weld on a washer, then weld on a nut.

If you're desperate, you can go to Lowes and purchase a small diamond hole saw that just fits over the extractor. Use it to drill AROUND the extractor.

Once the extractor is out you will need to heli-coil the hole back to its original size.

The welding process is always the best first choice, sometimes just the fact the stud was heated from welding and allowed to cool will break it loose. The only bit that would cut the extractor would be made of carbide. Carbide would probably cut anything so if you would slip..... Good luck, Allan.

I know this doesn’t help you now but next time you try to remove a stuck stud or bolt try heating it and melting wax or a crayon into the threads. Since a machinist friend taught me this trick all my "easy-outs" have been collecting dust in my tool box. I've even got rusty exhaust bolts off car front pipes with this method.

if the extractor is not too large it may be possible to use a tiny drill bit to drill beside the extractor and loosen it enough to get it out. this will require a light touch to avoid breaking the bit. if you have a brazing tip for your torch you can remove a lot of the temper from the ext. Work it back and forth with a sharp punch, you may be able to make it let go. probably best to find an old guy who has a feel for these things. ie fouled up a lot
