I have a 350 gas utility that the hydraulic pump is getting weak on and starting to leak out of the tach drive. The cost of a rebuilt pump is pretty high at around $800. Would it be feasible to just mount a crank driven pump on the front and not use the original pump just let it stay there to drive the distributor. I have a new 7.5 gpm pump in the shop and I could cut and tig weld fittings to the existing hard lines to run hoses to the new pump. Is it worth the trouble or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new pump

The original Stage I Super H had a distributor drive that is appropriate to use in place of the pump. Running a leaky pump will burn it up and or cause it to lock up with gear damage or worse. Even if it had oil routed from intake to exhaust, it would leak out and make trouble. Putting a crank driven pump on it is a fine idea. I would make a manifold that attaches at the reservoir to keep the original steel lines complete in the case some one wanted to put it back to stock. Jim
