Rats! PTO quit on 856

I was baling hay tonight with the 856. Last couple of times I started a bale I noticed it did not start up like it normally does. I had to pull the handle up further. It ran fine. I tied a bale, shut it off, dumped the bale and it would not start up. I don"t under stand how it could be working fine and then not start back up. Is it most likely a valve problem. I guess I will have to get the book out and see where to check the pressure.

just in case if the PTO unit is the same like what is on the 06 and 66 and 86 then it could be the small shear pin the is in the valve that is pulled up by your lever. i had that happen to me once cutting hay, just stop and all it was. it could save some time instead of pulling the unit out like i did the first time.

check oil, then check pressure down under the piviot for the valve through the hole in the bracket that holds the linkage there is a plug you will need a special fitting from your friendly dealer for about 30 dollars then screw in gauge. It should read about 160-240 depending on the tractor model. I would set it at the 200-240 figure. The valve will come out the bottom without pulling the unit. There is a plug there you will need to either face it down hill or drain the oil though.

As urbancase said in his post below, it may be the tiny connector pin has broken. If it is, you take the valve out the bottom of the unit. It will require removing some of the hitch stabilizer parts but otherwise it is rather simple. For the tiny pin I used a needle bearing roller from a U-joint cross and bearing. I found one that was the same diameter as the hole in the valve parts it connects through and then ground it on a bench grinder to the needed length. Saved a trip to the dealer. Has worked perfectly for many years.
Pin is item #27 in diagram
