656 TA/clutch housing install issues

Hello,
I have a 656 I removed the center section to put new seals in the TA. I reinstalled everything and now for some reason the clutch will not release. It is like the fingers are too far from the throw out bearing. I did not change anything with the clutch I lined everything up properly. Also for some reason it will not go into neutral even though the 3 shifter linkages appear to be into neutral. I am needing some help bad!!

Thank you

Sounds like you damaged the pressure plate when you bolted her together. We normally hang the clutch on transmission shaft and bolt to flywheel from underneath to avoid this problem. Far as neutral, a 656 is also difficult to assemble ta section to rear because you cannot visual the pilot bearing. I always put a rubber band on the pilot bearing, put transmission in 4th gear to support front of main shaft and peek in with a mirror to make sure all is going together properly. I would jack up rear wheel and play around with the shift linkage to make sure problem is external or internal.

Is there a way to tell if the pressure plate is damaged? Also if the rear pilot bearing is not properly seated it will cause it not to go into neutral?

Well, I am sure I could look at pressure plate and tell but I have seen a ton of plates over near 60 years. The fingers on a good clutch normally lay parallel to the face of the pressure plate. As linings wear the fingers move back toward throwout bearing. If your fingers are less than parallel toward the flywheel, I would suspect collapsed backing plate on clutch. Far as pilot bearing causing shift problems I can't say just what is or isn't taking place in there. That is why I suggest jacking up rear tire and manually moving all linkages forward and back into all gears to try to determine if there is a problem internally or externally.

Oh yeah they are far past parallel lol. Well I get a new pressure plate on the way! And I will let you know what I find with the shifting issues.

Thanks for your help!!

Hey Pete I ended up having to split the tractor at the trans and clutch housing again. That pilot bearing was ruined and wouldn't let it shift. When I go to reinstall it you said to use a mirror. Where would I get a good look at the bearing with the mirror unpon reinstallation? Thanks
