I have a 54SH. Was running it the other day and it sputtered and died. I haven't been able to start since. I changed the points and nothing. I thought the coil might be toast and tried another and still nothing. How can you tell if the coil is bad? I have 12 volts on both sides of small terminal. Another thing is that my lights don't work now and when I pull out the kill switch my gauge does not show a discharge. Can anyone give me some ideas on what to check? Also, it is a 12 volt system with an original coil. Do I need a resistor in front of the coil or a voltage reducing device? Thanks for your help

Your lights are fused with a 10A glass tube style fuse next to the push/pull ignition switch below the amp gauge, turn the cover 1/4 turn and it pops out with the fuse. Buy a box of five replacements at an auto parts store.

You should run a ballast resistor in the wire that runs from the ignition switch to the coil, a part from a '60's vintage Chrysler works well.

You don't say how old your ignition condenser is/was, but it sure sounds like that's your problem. All the new condensers are made off-shore and they're quality stinks. They used to easily last 250-400 hours of run time, now you're lucky to get 100-150 hrs.

The fuse for the lights is good. I did also put a different condenser out of an old tractor. Not sure if it is good or not. Do you just use a resistor even though it was 6 volt before? Is there a difference from 6 to 12 volt coils?

Are you sure your batt and the cables are good what voltage do you read when you hit the starter button at the starter.

The terminal on the coil that goes to the distributor should be grounded when the points are closed (that's what the points do) When the points open the high tension terminal (large center tower) should throw a spark.

No lights AND no needle movement when you turn on the ignition tells me that there is no power in the switchbox on the steering post.

The power comes from the battery side of the ignition switch and runs to the ammeter.

Not trying to be a smart#$#%^ but, does it have gas? That is the voice of experiance talking. A friend of mine had an M that sputtered and died. He change coils, points and condensor, all kinds of sstuff. He called me and I went over and started doing checks for myself. Thats when I reached in and tuerned the gas back on. Hit the starter ,she rolled over 2 times and ran like a champ. Again I truly am not trying to be a smarty, Kenny.
