starter problem on 300U

The starter on my 300U has started making a grinding type sound often when I try to start it. If I hit the switch several times it will eventually engage and turn the engine. Its not a problem with the ring gear as I know that problem. Can it be the drive unit on the starter that is a problem. Its a 12V system and cranks fine when it finally does crank.

A new style starter drive is available it contains a cushion in the pinion that reduces shock to the ring gear teeth, and has a much lighter return spring. Recommended by those who have used it including me. Jim

Could be a ring gear problem of the starter drive since both wear about the same. Turn the engine a 1/4 turn then try it again. If you still get the same thing bendex is rough. If it does not then ring gear teeth have burrs on them. Engines stop almost the same place most of the time so that area of the ring gear gets hit harder then any place else

I thought maybe Bendix and I changed it with no change in the problem. I know its not a ring gear issue as I have that issue on all my Farmalls so I know what it sounds like. I think I'm going with replace the drive idea and see what happens.
